My work in pictures is currently unfolding in the form of the three genres of figurative art:
· portraits,
· landscapes and
· still life.
In my portrait series, my inspiration comes from the Old Master paintings, as I am captivated by their ornate and decorative side. My portraits show nameless archetypal figures, who belong to a world now lost, but when I bring them up to date, I maintain that refined quality in the light and the details of their costumes. I am passionate about this kind of work, which is so different from the headlong rush of our world today.
In the same vein, my still lifes embody interludes of serenity, onto which the world can not inflict its chaos.
In my landscapes, I am capturing a memory of a natural environment that is pristine, wild and often unoccupied, just as it was before the ravages of pollution and over population.
If my paintings do have a message to put across, it is the quest for some kind of coherent thread between the worlds of today and yesterday.
Paintings in oil and on linen canvas provide a rich texture, created effortlessly by brush-strokes, gentle and vague, or bold and pronounced. The knife is what gives energy and immediacy to an entire work. And the colours I use are never pure, even if often they are strong and stand out.
I want my art to bring pleasure. It doesn’t try to provoke or offend people, but more to surprise them, by letting them discover anew aspects we have forgotten, and that link us back to our very own history, be it of glory or of pain.
