Interview with Heike Becker

Often when I confront people, a gesture, a glance or an expression I am deeply moved. From my inward reflection I project the people linear on the surface. It is about moods expressed in a face or in a bodily gesture. These moods reach me because they are inside me. The line shows itself hard and soft. I love the reduction to the essential, also the independent existence of the line, which I have drawn wet and printed afterwards. Multiple layers shall be shown: the apparently visible or obvious, hides more complex interrelations. A net of lines shines through, connects and builds new contexts.

Contemporary Art Station: Tell us about how you got started. When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

I love to paint, since I was a child. But it was quite naturally for me. After my carreer as a professional handball player I started to write books for children which needed to be illustrated. My drawings were convincing and expressive. At that moment I got to know, that I controled an other nonverbal language to express what I think and feel. 

CAS: What is your process like, from initial idea to the creation of the piece? Do you usually develop the idea for a project before you find the "canvas", or vice versa?

First there are the colours. Afterwards I start to paint lines. I am led by the energy of the interaction. I wash the paintings, destroy them and build them up again until the last process develops an independent existence which I have to discover myself.

CAS: What do you love most about your creative process?

I love the passion, when I am led by the energy and I am surprised by the result myself. It doesn`t matter if I write texts or sculpture or paint. Sometimes I express what is inside me. An in another moment there is an answer in which I have to grow in.

CAS: What role does art and the artist play in the broader social conversation today?

In my opinion, the artist has the opportunity to point out essential themes which concern everybody, worldwide. I have been working in groups of different artists which worked on themes in front of the visitors so they could participate in the process. In my books, I want to make visible for children, that the world is full of surprises. Sometimes I use art like a magnifiying glass to make visible what is often failed to see.

CAS: Name a few of your favourite artists and influences.

My most favourite artist and influencer is Jackson Pollock, closely followed by Marlene Dumas and Marina Abramovic. All of them touch me deep in my soul.  

CAS: What is the best advice you received as an artist?

One of my professors reminded me to hesitate, to make a brake during the process.

CAS: When did you discover your voice as an artist? 

I discovered my voice as an artist through the resonance of my observers.

CAS: What advice would you give to emerging artists trying to find their own? 

Never try to please.
